If you have not yet pledged, please do so, as we are entering the budgeting process and the closer we can estimate our income, the better it is. Thank you. Next weekend I will be at Siena Center in Racine with the Salvatorian candidates. (Candidates are those checking out religious life, and I am the Candidate Director for the Salvatorians. Fr. Peter Schuessler, SDS, will celebrate with you. Once a month, now through April, we meet with directors and candidates of other religious communities of women and men. Please keep us in your prayers. Liturgically, the Christmas season ended last Monday with the celebration of the Baptism of Jesus and we are now in a short stretch of Ordinary Time until Lent begins on February 14. The emphasis in this time is on the continuing “epiphanies” or revelations about this man Jesus. In the celebration of the Epiphany, we learned that He came for all people, not just the Jews. In the voice that was heard as His baptism by John in the Jordan, we learned that He is the Son of God. In our first reading today, God calls to Samuel three times before he recognizes that it is the Lord calling to him, not Eli, the master he was serving. In the Gospel, the epiphanies continue as John the Baptist introduces Jesus to Andrew and his companion, and then Andrew brings Simon Peter to Him. When John the Baptist introduces Jesus to Andrew and his companion, they don’t know what is going on. Jesus invites them, “Come, and you will see.” And it is through their time together with Him that already, the next day, Andrew can say to Simon Peter, “We have found the Messiah.” So with both Samuel and Andrew, it is a process of coming to recognize the Lord. That is why it is so important for us to get in the habit of spending time each day with the Lord: our eyes are opened and we can see in a different way! Last week we handed out the Post Game Review, an evening examination that helps us grow in our relationship with the Lord. If you did not get a copy, please pick one up in the back of church or the parish office and use it for a while. Hopefully, you will get in the habit of using this wonderful method of making sure we are growing in our spiritual life, not just coasting on cruise control. The Post Game Review can also be found on our web page. And let us support each other in prayer. -- Paul James Portland, SDS We have the 2018 Save Around Coupon books for sale in the school office for $25.

St. Pius has a number of ways we try to support parish members in a time of grief and bereavement. Health Ministry would like to explore our ability to enhance and possibly expand that support. One way is to have someone join us who would like to be trained (if not already) and just focus on this special ministry.
Interested? If you are not already experienced in this field or if you would need to be updated, there is an upcoming training program. If you are interested in any of this please call Pat Bruce 414-534-5554. Dear Supportive Parishioners,
Thank you for your support of Wauwatosa Catholic School. Please consider volunteering for a basketball concession or admission shift on a Saturday at Wauwatosa Catholic. It is a great way to help, view students in action, and meet school families you may see in church. All volunteers must have their Safeguarding requirements met. Thanks for your consideration. The Guest House currently provides shelter for 86 adult men. It is the largest publicly funded emergency shelter in Milwaukee. We need volunteers to donate or prepare food and or serve for this one night commitment. This is an opportunity to help others as a Parish Collaborative family. If you are interested in donating food or your time, please email Linda Swiderski or Tony Burkart for specifics. Thank you for volunteering/donating for this worth while evening of service. We will be preparing and serving a chili dinner. I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas. The children’s pageant was great as was the music and carols. Thank you to all involved in our liturgies and music, including those who spent some of their time on Sunday after the 10:15 Mass, helping change over the environment from Advent to Christmas. Good job!
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We all know that family is important: it is where we learn to live as God wants us to live. I invite us to pay close attention to these words from Paul’s letter to the Colossians that we heard as the second reading: Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love What inspiring families we have when these virtues are lived and modeled to children! As we begin a new year, I invite us to resolve to live these virtues better in our daily lives, thus bringing the Light of Christ into the world. As a help for our spiritual growth, a spiritual exercise called the “Post Game Review” will be introduced at Mass this coming weekend. Please see our newsletter, The Invitation, which will arrive this week, for more information. I wish each of you a healthy and holy 2018. -- Paul James Portland, SDS We have the 2018 Save Around Coupon books for sale in the school office or St. Pius parish office for $25. There is $5,000+ in savings coupons. This is an 8th grade fundraiser toward their Washington trip.

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY OF THE WEEK: invite someone who normally doesn’t go to church to accompany you to a Christmas service.
With the way the calendar fell this year (4th Sunday of Advent followed by Christmas the next day), we had a crisis in the office! (If it’s the worst crisis we ever have, I will be happy). Marlyn, who does such a wonderful job on the bulletin, was wondering if she should use the cover for the 4th Sunday of Advent or Christmas. Our consensus was to go with Christmas (presuming that some people would come for Christmas who would not come for the 4th Sunday of Advent). I face the same question in writing this letter: do I focus on Advent or Christmas? In a real sense, it doesn’t matter much: while we are celebrating the first coming of Christ 2000 years ago with Christmas, our life is still in Advent, that is, preparing the way of the Lord so that His Light can shine ever more brightly in our own lives and in the world around us. Hopefully, our quiet time these last three weeks has sharpened our awareness that the way we live is vitally important to evangelization, that is, bringing the joy and peace of Christ to others. I wish each and every one of you a blessed Christmas. I am honored to be a part of the St. Pius X community with you and thank God for the community’s strong sense of social justice and reaching out to those in need. That is indeed a crucial way of witnessing to Christ and bringing His light into the world. God bless. -- Paul James Portland, SDS Retrouvaille is a program for married couples who feel bored, frustrated or angry in their marriages. Some experience coldness and simply shut down.
